This Thursday lives the eleventh day of mobilizations in France, to protest against the pension reform of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne. Thousands of people have gathered at the demonstrations in cities such as Baiona, Paris, Rennes or Marseille and some incidents have been recorded in Lyon and Nantes.

The unions yesterday called for a mass mobilization after the failure of the meeting they had with the government. They affirm that it is necessary to continue to press “to achieve the repeal of the reform”.

Sophie Binet, new Secretary General of the General Labor Federation (CBT) who led one of the marches in Paris confirmed that the The government “lives in a parallel realityand that “he doesn’t understand what is happening in the country”.

The Secretary General of the French Democratic Confederation of Labor (CFDT), Laurent Berger emphasized that “this movement continues to rely on the popular supportand that “the rejection of this reform remains as strong”.

The unions have met about 250 demonstrations and they estimate that some 800,000 people can participate. The Ministry of the Interior has deployed more than 11,000 police and gendarmes.

Some of the major universities have seen their access blocked and many colleges have closed their doors. Likewise, groups of workers have also occupied the headquarters and facilities of some companies and multinationals.

There have been mobilizations in the morning incidents: some damage to street furniture, shop windows and benches, which has led to police response, for example in Nantes and Lyon, where they have fired tear gas at the demonstrators.

Large demonstration in Baiona

In Ipar Euskal Herria, the largest demonstration has been held in Baiona. The conveners have encrypted participation in some 15,000 people, while the police have counted about 5,000 people. The message from those present was clear: “it’s time to keep printing united”.

However, the effect of the protest day is slightly less than on previous occasions: for example, the train station was open and working.

All eyes are now on what the Constitutional Council will decide on April 14.
