Carrot and Stick – “New World Order”: Lavrov on peace talks

Date:

After yesterday’s Crimean saga from the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has now spoken out about diplomatic moves to end the war. However, the conditions are tough.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov traveled to Turkey on Friday and heard some interesting statements during the state visit. For example, the top diplomat believes that peace talks to settle the war in Ukraine are possible – given a “new world order” without US dominance.

Russian interests must be taken into account in the negotiations, he continued. “It’s about the principles on which the new world order will be based.” Lavrov also threatened Russia to withdraw from the grain deal with Ukraine.

Will Russia withdraw from the grain deal with Ukraine?
“If there is still no move to remove barriers to Russian fertilizer and grain exports, we will consider whether we need the agreement,” Lavrov told the state news agency Tass. If the West does not budge, Russia could resume its blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.

Role of Türkiye and Qatar
Meeting with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in Ankara, Lavrov told the West: “They should continue to ship the relevant goods from Ukraine by land by rail or by river.” Russia will then cooperate with Turkey and Qatar to bring its agricultural products to the world market. The plans for this have already been discussed. The agreement expires mid-next month without renewal.

Granary of Europe
After the start of the offensive war against Ukraine in February last year, Russia had blocked Ukraine’s Black Sea ports for months, preventing the export of grain. Ukraine is one of the world’s leading exporters.

As a result, there were fears of a hunger crisis, especially in poorer countries. An agreement was then negotiated in the summer, brokered by Turkey and the United Nations. Since then, according to Turkish information, more than 27 million tons of Ukrainian grain have entered the world market.

The agreement, originally for 120 days, has been extended twice, the last time for only 60 days. Russia has repeatedly threatened to scrap the agreement. This is also justified by the fact that the country’s own grain and fertilizer exports are hampered by Western sanctions.
