Chinese President Xi Jinping announced on Friday that he would like to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, the conditions and time should be suitable for this. Xi has spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin several times since the war.
The war in Ukraine can only be ended with a political solution, the Chinese head of state said. All parties involved should meet midway through to determine the exact terms. Xi Jinping met with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in China. During their talks in Beijing, the two urged him to use his influence over Putin to end the war. As a member of the United Nations Security Council, China has a “great responsibility,” von der Leyen said.
For now, however, Xi only reiterated well-known Chinese positions, generally advocating negotiations, and also touched on Russia’s justification for the war. On Friday, he finally said he wanted to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Selenskyj had previously expressed this wish. “It was interesting to hear President Xi reiterate his willingness to speak (with Zelenskyy) when the circumstances and the right time come. I think that’s a positive development,” von der Leyen said on Thursday.
Visit to Moscow
Since the start of the war more than a year ago, Xi Putin has spoken on the phone several times and even visited Moscow about two weeks ago. China’s attitude is mainly determined by its geostrategic rivalry with the US and its common front with Russia against the US. In current talks, Xi also called on Europeans to leave the United States. China has always “considered Europe as an independent pole in a multipolar world”.
Unlike von der Leyen, Macron has so far been reluctant to criticize the country. During the visit, various economic agreements were signed, including by aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
