In the Montenegrin coastal town of Ulcinj, a stretch of beach has recently been opened reserved only for Muslim women wearing hijabs or burkinis, accommodating the ever-increasing number of Muslim tourists from Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Ulcinj is predominantly Muslim and has enjoyed increasing popularity among tourists from Muslim-dominated countries – especially from neighbouring Albania – especially since the 1990s. For this reason, a small section of the twelve-kilometre-long sandy beach (Velika Plaža) has now been fitted with a privacy screen of wicker fences and several sun loungers (see TikTok post below).
Privacy protection, but also no sea view
In this area, Muslims can stay completely free and undisturbed – without curious or skeptical looks from other swimmers. Men – including Muslims – have taken to the “Hijab beach” (the term refers to various forms of covering a woman, where only the face is visible, Anm.) no access. However, the view of the sea is also obstructed by the barrier.
By the way, Ulcinj also has a nudist area and its own secluded book for women only, which is guarded by guards. However, there is no obligation to cover up there; every visitor can walk around as he pleases.
