It is a tradition on Holy Saturday to take home consecrated fire from the church with a sponge. However, a fire broke out in a Ferlacher’s vehicle.
Around 6 am, a 50-year-old man from Ferlach took part in the fire ceremony and then carried a glowing Easter sponge in a tin box and another non-glowing sponge outside this box in the hold of his van.
He parked the vehicle in front of the garage of his property in Ferlach around 6:45 a.m. and removed the sponge from the vehicle.
For reasons still unclear, the unignited sponge began to glow and a fire broke out in the vehicle.
At 9:54 a.m., a passing driver noticed the developing fire and, with the help of neighbours, was able to quickly extinguish it, preventing greater damage.
There was only minor damage to the vehicle.
The FF Reßnig, Ferlach and Kirschentheuer were deployed with a total of 45 troops.
