The Ministry of the Interior and its police officers have achieved a pleasant “Easter miracle” with the “Safe Action”. With 2,500 patrol cars, 350 motorcycles and 100 civilian patrols, the emergency services were continuously present on Austrian roads. Not a single fatal accident has been reported from Good Friday to noon on Easter Monday.
By the way: in 2019 eight people were killed in Easter traffic and in 2004 even 17 people were killed in road traffic. “The Austrian police officers on duty over the Easter weekend have made an important contribution to road safety. I thank everyone,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP).
Bizarre things from Vienna
In contrast, a bizarre case from Vienna shows how anger over speeding apparently led to a costly act of vandalism. Because in the Breitenleer Straße in Vienna-Donaustadt, a still unknown Tempobolzer tried to destroy a radar box. After the driver failed to break the window of the radar box, he forced the side slits of the device. Since there were almost no people outside around 4 a.m. on Easter Sunday, the “radar box hater” even set fire to the cabin: he poured a flammable liquid inside and ignited the device, which threatened to condemn him as a speed gun – but without success.
Damage up to 60,000 euros
“Only the outer shell was damaged by the incident. The measuring device itself remained undamaged,” said the police. “The vandal may be convicted on the basis of the radar photo and will have to pay the damage of up to 60,000 euros,” said police spokeswoman Barbara Gass.
