Accusations and criticism, climate protectors against climate protectors: the Fridays for Future movement accuses the last generation of activists in Germany of dividing society with their protests. The main reference is made to the blockades on the roads, which time and again – also in Austria – lead to enormous traffic disruption.
The last generation has made a name for itself in several countries with roadblocks, but also with other controversial pasting campaigns, for example in museums. Climate activists from the group had on Thursday obstructed the start of the Easter journey in Hamburg in key places – for example in front of the Elbe tunnel.
“It is not for nothing that we appeal to other forms of protest”
The blockades in Hamburg mainly affected commuters “who cannot afford to live in the center of Hamburg nor use public transport due to the lack of expansion,” said FFF spokeswoman Annika Rittmann of the German news agency. It is not for nothing that Fridays for Future has always relied on other forms of protest.
“The climate crisis needs solutions for society as a whole, and we can only find and fight for them together and not by pitting people against each other in everyday life,” says Rittmann.
Blockade wave planned for late April
In the last week of April, the last generation wants to block the streets in Berlin until May. “From Monday, April 24, we will bring Berlin to a peaceful halt with street blockades,” the website reads. On the previous Sunday (April 23) in the afternoon at the Brandenburger Tor a meeting was planned. The activists are calling for a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour on highways as an immediate measure against the impending “climate collapse”.
Fridays for Future’s climate demos are inspired by the Swede Greta Thunberg, who first took place for a “school strike for the climate” in front of the parliament in Stockholm in August 2018.
