Another smuggler has been arrested in Carinthia. A total of 20 refugees should have been smuggled through Austria, but already in Styria several people jumped out of the van due to lack of oxygen.
The incident happened on Good Friday. The control center of the state of Styria received a report that several people jumped from a van near a supermarket in the Weiz district. When they arrived on scene, police found two men. “A direct search in the area found another six men. There are seven Bangladeshis and a Pakistani citizen,” says the Carinthian state police directorate.
Hit the loading door with his fist
The panel van was a vehicle with a German registration. The cramped hold and lack of oxygen caused the men health problems, so they banged their fists on the cargo door during the ride to draw attention to themselves. The driver, a 32-year-old Azerbaijani citizen, stopped and opened the side door, after which the men fled outside.
“Thanks to the immediate search of the control centers of Styria and Carinthia, the suspicious vehicle was stopped by officers of the police station of the Wolfsberg motorway in the Wolfsberg district. Twelve more illegal persons were found in the hold, including two Bangladeshis and ten Pakistanis .
The country of destination was probably Italy
The driver of the van was arrested on the spot and taken to Klagenfurt prison. The aliens were taken to Klagenfurt for interrogation under immigration law. “They traveled to Romania with a valid work visa and were smuggled from there via Hungary to Austria. The target country should have been Italy,” explains the State Police Directorate.
