Even after the end of the multi-day maneuvers off the coast of Taiwan, numerous Chinese warships are still on the scene (see video above), and are still being followed with great tension on the island. Beijing’s announcement that it would establish a no-fly zone north of Taiwan briefly raised concerns about further escalation. However, the Taiwanese Ministry of Transport quickly gave the signal: the roadblock will only apply for half an hour on Sunday.
South Korea’s transport ministry said the closure was solely related to a falling object from a satellite missile. The Japanese government said it had received similar information. It concerns aviation activities. A longer closure of the airspace could have had enormous consequences for air traffic in the region. According to an insider, 60 to 70 percent of flights between Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia and flights between Taiwan and South Korea, Japan and North America are said to have been affected.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on his country’s armed forces to train more for “real combat operations”. Speaking to the Southern Naval Command of the People’s Liberation Army, Xi said the military should “resolutely defend China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime interests and maintain stability in the suburbs,” China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported on Wednesday.
Military exercise following visit to US
China had just held military exercises around the democratically governed island, which it considers its territory. However, the government in Taiwan wants to keep the island independent and has a powerful ally in the US. The Chinese move came in response to a meeting between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California.
