Former US President Donald Trump has sued his former lawyer Michael Cohen for more than half a billion dollars. The accusation: the lawyer, who has since broken with Trump, would have violated his mandate.
As court documents in Florida emerged on Wednesday, Cohen is accused of violating his mandate relationship with Trump: He disclosed confidential information and spread untruths, it is said. A statement from Cohen was not immediately available.
Multiple lawsuits against Trump
Trump’s longtime confidant had testified before a grand jury that later indicted the Republican as the first ex-president in US history. Trump pleaded not guilty in the case in early April. He is involved in several other lawsuits.
Paid hush money to porn star
Cohen, who has since parted ways with Trump, worked closely with the ex-president as his personal attorney for 12 years. In the 2016 election campaign, for example, he said he paid hush money on behalf of Trump to porn star Stormy Daniels (pictured below) to avert political damage from him shortly before the election.
Trump’s company later reimbursed him for the costs in several installments, it is said. Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison in 2018 for, among other things, violating campaign finance laws.
Civil case about fraudulent business practices
Trump is expected again in New York on Thursday for another legal matter. According to consistent media reports, he will appear in Manhattan for questioning in a civil fraudulent business case.
New York Attorney General Letitia James accuses Trump, the company named after him and his three children Donald Junior, Eric and Ivanka of increasing or decreasing assets as needed, such as for easier access to loans or to pay less tax.
The plaintiff seeks damages
With the civil lawsuit, which will be heard in October, James wants the Trumps to pay 250 million dollars (about 229 million euros) in compensation. Trump’s company denies the allegations.
Last week, Trump faced criminal charges in New York over hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels – as the first former US president in history.
