A video that appears to show the beheading of a captured Ukrainian soldier has sparked outrage worldwide. According to Russian civil rights activists, a former member of the notorious mercenary group Gruppe Wagner has now identified Russian mercenaries in the footage.
The video was sent to ex-mercenary Andrei Medvedev, who fled to Norway months ago, applied for asylum there and is currently being held in Sweden, the founder of Russian civil rights organization Gulagu.net, Vladimir Ossechkin, said in an interview on Wednesday.
‘Clearly recognizes his former colleagues’
“He listened and watched it carefully several times, and he clearly recognizes his former colleagues there, fighters of the Wagner mercenary group,” Ossechkin said in a message published on the YouTube channel of expatriate Russian opposition figure Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
Medvedev identified the soldiers based on “characteristic exclamations and their way of speaking,” the civil rights activist continued. At the beginning of the video, a voice can be heard saying that the victim’s head will likely be cut off while still alive.
Another video, reportedly taken in the hotly contested city of Bakhmut, shows the decapitated bodies of several suspected Ukrainian soldiers next to a wrecked armored vehicle. According to the CNN news channel, a fighter of the Wagner mercenary group sounds: “The vehicle was destroyed by a mine. And they were killed. Someone cut their heads off.”
