Crashed into the sea – North Korea fired another ballistic missile

Date:

South Korea and Japan say North Korea has launched another ballistic missile. The missile was probably an intermediate or long-range missile. According to the Japanese Coast Guard, the projectile fell into the sea east of North Korea.

The missile was said to have been launched near Pyongyang at 7:23 am (local time), the South Korean general staff announced on Thursday. The Japanese authorities therefore temporarily warned residents of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and aircraft in the vicinity of the projectile around 08:00 (local time, 01:00 CEST). The warning was later withdrawn.

The Japanese television station NTV even reported that several projectiles were fired, possibly ballistic missiles.

Shot just two days after new threats
The launch came two days after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un called for the country’s war deterrent to the United States to be stepped up in “more practical and offensive” ways.

Tensions rise after missile tests
The range of medium-range missiles is more than 800 kilometers, that of long-range missiles 5,500 kilometers. UN decrees prohibit North Korea from testing ballistic missiles of any range. Such missiles can be armed with one or more nuclear warheads. The country is subject to severe international sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula are currently rising again. After an unprecedented series of missile tests last year, North Korea again tested nuclear-capable missiles this year, including ICBMs and guided missiles. Meanwhile, the US and ally South Korea resume large-scale joint military exercises. North Korea has criticized this.
