The unusually strong and prolonged flu wave in Austria came to an end last week. The Center for Virology of MedUni Vienna reports this on Thursday. Infections occur only sporadically.
The positive percentage of the samples evaluated dropped to seven percent. Doctors no longer speak of an epidemic level for flu below ten percent. The MedUni stated that the flu epidemic this season would be in late November. The peak of 5,849 new flu and flu-like illnesses (data from the Health and Food Safety Agency) was reached in the week before Christmas. Until now this was only in January or February.
No surprise
The situation of a long and strong flu wave was expected after the two previous Corona winters because the wave did not appear at all and was very small then. This is attributed to the measures to combat the pandemic. As a result, many people had not had a flu infection, their immunity had fallen.
This winter also saw an increase in RS viruses (RSV), which, like the “real flu”, can cause serious illness in children.
