Manfred Mayer lived in his apartment in Ansfelden for 23 years. Now everything is gone in one fell swoop: “I just ran out in my underpants and bodysuit.” The cause of the fire is a matter for the judiciary.
Manfred Mayer turns 60 this weekend. For his birthday, he wanted to give his two children the albums of their baby photos. But they burned on Easter weekend – and with it all the belongings that the Ansfelden resident had collected in his three-room apartment over the past 23 years. “I’ve lost my whole life. No one can replace that for me anymore,” Mayer says in the interview with “Krone”.
Underpants and bodysuit
In the night from Saturday to Sunday, a fire broke out in an apartment building in Ansfelden – we reported. Namely in Mayer’s apartment, where he lived with his ex-partner (45). The 59-year-old reports that he shouted “fire”, knocked on the other residents and ran outside. “Then I just stood outside in my underpants and bodysuit.” With a cloth over his nose and mouth, he was able to retrieve his cell phone before the flames finally engulfed everything.
Underwear and telephone, that’s all he had. In the meantime, relatives and friends would at least have lent him something to wear. Particularly dramatic: according to his own statements, Mayer is not insured. “I’m a handyman, I’ve always done everything myself and didn’t need anything like that.” He hopes his roommate’s insurance will cover the damage.
Fire report
The fire was caused by two hotplates that were on. That is why the public prosecutor’s office received a report, so far only against the woman who lived in the apartment. Suspicion: “Negligence causes a fire.” Mayer, on the other hand, says: “My roommate is seriously ill, can’t remember anything for more than a minute. The fire was definitely not intentional. We’ve also been looking for a childcare place for a long time.”
