After the failed uprising in Russia, there are still many question marks over the future of Yevgeny’s Wagner battle group. Apparently Belarus already knows more – and the first details can be seen.
Specifically, they want to use the infamous group of mercenaries to train Belarusian special forces, as the country’s defense ministry said on Thursday. In addition, photos of masked men in a training area were published: “For a week, special forces and company representatives practice combat missions here at the Bretski military training area”.
Poland ready for ‘different scenarios’
The choice of location alone can cause teeth gnashing in Poland. The Belarusian training ground is only a few kilometers away from the eastern border with Poland. Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski said: “Belarus has already carried out attacks on our border with the help of groups of illegal migrants.” Further attacks are conceivable, “possibly using various military or paramilitary formations”.
The Ministry of Defense in Warsaw said on Thursday it was closely monitoring the situation. They are ready for “different scenarios”. A two-brigade exercise is already underway to demonstrate Poland’s “absolute ability” to respond immediately to any attempt at destabilization.
More attention also in Russia
The Kremlin, in turn, expressed concern about the exercise of Polish troops. This, of course, is a cause for increased attention, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. EU and NATO member Poland shares a 418 kilometer border with Belarus. The situation there escalated in 2021: thousands of people tried to enter the EU illegally. The European Union accused Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko of organizing migrants from crisis areas to the EU’s external border to put pressure on the West.
The private Russian mercenary group Wagner had played a major role in the Russian offensive in Ukraine until June, but then attempted to overthrow the Russian military leadership with a march on Moscow with a revolt on June 24. According to Russian information, this ended after a few hours through the mediation of Lukashenko.
