Following his historic indictment, former US President Donald Trump appeared in New York again on Thursday for questioning in a civil case involving fraudulent business practices — and once again there was chaos.
The 76-year-old arrived in a motorcade to Attorney General Letitia James’ office on Thursday. About eight hours later, the column departed again. It was Trump’s first visit to New York following his criminal charges last week in connection with paying a porn star hush money.
Assets shown as needed?
Some opponents and supporters of the former US president had gathered in front of the attorney general’s office. In the trade practices case, the New York Attorney General had filed civil charges against Trump. She accuses him, the company named after him and his three children Donald Junior, Eric and Ivanka of having shown larger or smaller assets as needed, for example to gain easier access to loans or to pay less tax.
With the case, which is due for trial in October, James wants the Trumps to pay $250 million in reparations. Trump’s company denies the allegations. In an earlier interrogation under oath last year, Trump refused to testify hundreds of times for hours — except for his name.
According to media reports, Trump made statements this time. “President Trump is not only willing, but eager, to testify before the Attorney General today,” one of his lawyers, Alina Habba, said beforehand. “He further emphasizes that he has nothing to hide and looks forward to explaining the great success of his billion-dollar company to the Attorney General.” The results of the investigation are not yet known.
Heated atmosphere in the US
The mood in the US over Trump’s legal prosecution is heated. He is being investigated for a number of possible crimes. Trump himself dismisses all matters as politically motivated actions. He wants to win the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election.
Accused of paying hush money
Last week, Trump became the first former US president to face criminal charges. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg accused him of increasing his chances in the 2016 presidential election by paying hush money to two women, violating election laws. He tried to disguise the payments with false entries in business documents.
