On January 8, thousands of far-right activists supporting Bolsonaro attacked the three powers of the nation in Brasilia, intending to force a military intervention to overthrow Lula da Silva, who had come to power eight days earlier.
Brazil’s Supreme Court on Friday ruled that former President Jair Bolsonaro must file a report with the police within 10 days, as part of a process investigating the coup attempt on January 8.
On that date, thousands of far-right activists who supports Bolsonaro attacked the three powers of the nation in Brasilia, intending to force a military intervention to overthrow the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvawho had come to power eight days earlier.
That day, Bolsonaro was in the United Stateswhere he had traveled to on December 30, still in his capacity as president, intending not to hand over the presidential sash to Lula, whose victory in last October’s election always made him suspicious.
The thousands of Bolsonaristas who attacked the headquarters of the Supreme Court, the parliament and the presidency on January 8 were for camped for over two months demanding a coup at the gates of the army headquarters, in an anti-democratic attitude that did not condemn and even supported the leader of the ultra-right.
Because those events were 2,151 people arrested, 294 of whom are in prisonwhile the rest will respond freely to the courts.
The Supreme Court has included Bolsonaro in the investigation to determine whether, even when he was in the United States that day, from where back on March 30instigated that movement or even played a role in planning the coup attempt.
The former president is being investigated in a dozen trials pending in the ordinary justice system and four more also pending in the Supreme Court, as well as other Electoral Justice cases.
