Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s election campaign in Wakayama Prefecture was overshadowed by an incident: a smoke bomb exploded shortly before his scheduled speech. A suspect was immediately arrested.
The smoke bomb exploded with a loud bang (as can also be heard in the Twitter video below). The security forces immediately overpowered the alleged perpetrator and handcuffed him. Meanwhile, Kishida has been brought to safety unharmed, Japanese television channel NHK reported on Saturday.
In the prefecture, Kishida wanted to give a speech in support of a candidate from his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). In July last year, Kishida’s predecessor, Shinzo Abe, was also shot dead on the street during a campaign speech in the ancient imperial city of Nara. The assassination attempt on the prime minister sparked outrage around the world.
