Former European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili, who is suspected of corruption, does not want to return to Greece without an acquittal. “If I fail to convince the Belgian judiciary that I am innocent, I will never return to my home country,” Kaili said on Saturday. The Belgian judiciary allowed her to leave prison under conditions on Friday after almost four months.
She must now remain under house arrest with electronic monitoring. “I will never admit that I betrayed the people who voted for me,” Kaili added. Kaili spent the first evening under house arrest with her daughter in her Brussels apartment, her lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos said. “She would like to participate again in the sessions of the European Parliament (after the end of the legal procedure),” continued Dimitrakopoulos.
The scandal, which became public at the end of last year, concerns the alleged influence of the governments of Qatar and Morocco on decisions of the EU parliament. Prosecutors have charged Kaili and others with corruption, money laundering and membership in a criminal organization.
