At least 27 people have been killed and 26 others injured, 17 of them seriously, in a bus crash in southern Mexico. The bus fell from a slope about 20 meters deep in Magdalena Peñasco in Oaxaca state on Wednesday morning (local time).
The cause of the accident was probably a failure of the brakes on a curve, according to a statement from the civil protection authority of the municipality of Tlaxiaco. Rescue workers were deployed to the scene of the accident with an excavator, as shown in the photos.
Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara sent his condolences to the families of the victims on Twitter.
Bus accidents resulting in numerous deaths are not uncommon in Mexico. The reason: the buses often drive at excessive speeds. Since there are no passenger trains in the North American country, there is often no alternative to bus travel.
