However, Javier Hurtado opts for “more differentiation within the brand”, after the TSJPV temporarily suspended the use of the Viñedos de Álava label.
The Basque Minister of Tourism, Trade and Consumption, the socialist Javier Hurtado, has defended the sustainability of the Rioja Alavesa wineries “within the Rioja Designation of Origin because of its importance and international repercussions”, although he has opted for “more differentiation within the brand.
In an interview on Radio Euskadi, Hurtado referred to the decision of the Court of Justice of the Basque Country suspending the possibility of marketing wine under the brand ‘Viñedos de Álava’.
After expressing his great respect for the judicial decisions, as well as for the decisions of the Basque government in other areas and those of business people and winemakers, “who are very few today”, he stressed that “as Director of Tourism and as a socialist from Alava” have always defended “the sustainability of these wineries within the Rioja Designation of Origin, due to its international repercussions and its importance”.
However, he has emphasized that they have also defended that what needs to be done is “deepening this differentiation of Rioja Alavesa within the Denomination of Origin”.
