After a stone fall – “It’s a miracle nothing happened!”

Date:

A huge boulder crashed into the front door of sculptor Helmut Machhammer. In an interview with the “Krone”, the artist describes the dramatic moments.

It was 07:00 on Friday when – as reported – a one meter high boulder broke off the steep slope opposite the old vicarage in St. Margarethen ob Töllerberg and thundered into the middle of the provincial road.

Miraculously, there was not a soul out there at the time. The stone broke in the middle of the road – and two large pieces were then thrown against the front door of the old vicarage building.

“Normally, the schoolchildren are already on the sidewalk towards primary school at this time. And the drivers and the school bus also drive on the street during this time,” says sculptor Helmut Machhammer, who lives in the old presbytery. Fortunately, he and his 16-year-old son rarely use the front door on the street. “We usually go out through the back door. My son was very lucky because he had just left for school,” says Machhammer.

“Just seconds after the rockfall, a friend of mine passed the road in his car,” reports fire chief Patrick Achatz, who and his comrades, led by the state geologist, cleared the remaining debris from the escarpment.
