At the edge of a forest in the district of Höring in the municipality of Auerbach (Upper Austria), a GPS transmitter determined its last location on April 5. It was zip-fastened to the remains of a tame pigeon. A young red kite was originally tagged with the GPS module in southern Sweden last June. The bird of prey has disappeared. BirdLIfe fears the animal may have been killed.
The GPS data makes it possible to draw detailed conclusions about the whereabouts of the GPS transmitter: on March 28, the red kite, passing the northern edge of the Alps from its winter home in the south of France, reached the district of Braunau. Until his disappearance on April 5, he was in the border area of the municipalities of Auerbach and Feldkirchen/Mattighofen. Lack of movement from the GPS module suggested something had happened to the red kite.
Sender stood at the foot of dead pigeon
BirdLife Austria bird of prey guardians were asked by the staff of the LIFE Eurokite project to assist in the search. “Instead, we found the remains of a tame pigeon with the red kite’s GPS transmitter attached to its foot with a cable tie,” reports BirdLife’s Florian Billinger. It was found on the edge of a forest in the Höring district of the municipality of Auerbach. It can be assumed that the bird of prey was killed illegally. The red kite has disappeared.
wanted witnesses
As of 2017, 13 Red Kites in Upper Austria have been proven or very likely victims of illegal persecution.
BirdLife Austria is asking witnesses who can provide information about the current incident to report it via the birdcrime hotline +43 660 869 2327 or the reporting platform www.kaiseradler.at. The tip can also be passed on anonymously.
