Sweden’s largest military exercise in more than a quarter of a century began on Monday. 26,000 people are taking part in the maneuver, which is intended to test the responsiveness of all sites. The exercise will last until May 11.
The geographical focus is on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland and in the south of the country. The military exercise, which will last from April 17 to May 11, will be attended by the air and naval forces. According to an army broadcast, 13 other countries, including Austria, are participating in addition to Sweden. The United States sends 700 naval soldiers to central Sweden and hundreds of British troops must secure the simulated landing of 1,000 Finnish soldiers in Oskarshamn.
Increased military presence since 2013
26,000 people are involved in “Aurora 23”. The exercise is designed to test the ability to respond to an attack on the Scandinavian country, the Swedish military’s website said. The northern European country had already stepped up its military presence on the island of Gotland in 2013. Previously, Russian naval activities in the Baltic Sea had increased.
After the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Sweden, which was previously non-aligned, applied with Finland to join the NATO military alliance. While Finland has been an official member since April 4, Sweden has yet to wait, mainly due to Turkey’s opposition.
