Two large fires broke out in the Russian border town of Belgorod on Monday evening and the power went out in part of the city. The trigger would have been a drone attack – with explosives. A shelling had been reported the day before.
As Russian media report, a substation next to a detention center is said to have gone up in flames during a dangerous drone attack. The official side – as usual – blames the Ukrainian side. What exactly is behind this is difficult to prove, because internal disputes cannot be ruled out either.
There are no independent studies. Belgorod Oblast governor Vyacheslav Gladkov confirmed the fires and indicated that they had already been extinguished. He said there were no deaths. The Kremlin has so far remained silent.
It is not the first such incident on Russian soil since the start of the war in Ukraine. Incidents regularly occur there, for which there are always only vague explanations.
Shelling on Easter Sunday
The day before, on Russian Easter Sunday, there had been a shelling in Belgorod Oblast, which caused extensive damage. Here too, the Russian side saw the Ukrainian forces as responsible. There would be no casualties as people were staying at the local cemetery at the time due to the festivities. It remains to be seen if the information can be trusted or if it is just embellished.
Dozens dead since the start of the war
Since the beginning of the Russian offensive war, there have been regular reports from the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, of shelling of border areas and the use of air defense systems.
