In February, Greenpeace failed in its objection to the classification of nuclear energy and natural gas as climate-friendly forms of energy generation within the EU. Now the environmental organization – in addition to the Austrian branch and seven other country offices – has filed a complaint with the European Court of Justice.
“Nuclear and gas cannot be sustainable. At the urging of the industry lobby, the EU Commission wants to sell a decades-old problem as a solution,” says Lisa Panhuber, spokeswoman for Greenpeace in Austria. “Putting even more money into industries that led us to the nature and climate crisis is a disaster Instead, Greenpeace demands that all available resources should be directed towards renewable energy, renovations, new mobility concepts and a delayed circular economy. In other words, the delegated legal act of the European Commission is completely revoked.
Austria also sues against “greenwashing program”
In October last year, Austria already appealed to the ECJ against the controversial EU classification of gas and nuclear energy as climate-friendly investments. Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) criticized the taxonomy decision of the European Commission as a “greenwashing program for nuclear energy and fossil natural gas”.
According to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the EU should only promote nuclear energy in very special cases. The European Commission does not respond to France’s request to equate nuclear energy with renewable energy.
