According to US sources, US special forces killed a senior member of the extremist group Islamic State (IS) in Syria on Monday. The US Department of Defense said the man was planning attacks in the Middle East and Europe. Abd-al-Hadi Mahmoud al-Hachi Ali planned the kidnapping of government officials abroad. Two other armed people were killed in the helicopter attack.
Two weeks ago, US forces killed Khalid Ajdd Ahmed al-Jaburi, another senior ISIS leader believed to be responsible for planning attacks in Europe and Turkey.
The attack took place in the Jarabulus region east of Aleppo, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is close to the opposition. The helicopters involved in the operation took off from a base near the Syrian-Turkish border.
ISIS cells remain active in Syria
The US military is deployed in Syria in areas controlled by the Kurdish militia YPG and its allies. The US armed forces there support their fight against IS, which had ruled large areas in Syria and neighboring Iraq. Despite the military victory over IS announced in 2019, its cells are still active in the country and carry out attacks. In 2022, IS claimed responsibility for about 280 attacks in Syria. At its peak in 2014, ISIS controlled a third of Iraq and Syria.
