Climate problem – streams that are too warm become deadly for trout

Date:

Fish from local waters is very popular with Austrians. But production is declining due to climate change and predators such as the otter.

On average, every Styrian eats nine kilos of fish a year – but less than ten percent of that comes from good, local water. And: this low rate is also in danger of falling.

Last year, 340 Styrian pond managers brought 400 tons of carp and 600 tons of trout-like fish to the market. Here alone, huge decreases compared to the year can be observed, namely 200 tons less for carp and minus 50 for trout, while the possible capacities could even be 1500 or 1300 tons.

But more and more are throwing in the towel. Hannes Igler, whose trout farm at three locations (Kalwang, Leoben, Mautern) is the largest in the country, explains why: “Because these fish need oxygenated running water,” says the professional. “From a water temperature of 15 or 16 degrees, it becomes relatively critical for salmon trout, salmon or brown trout. They get problems with their gills, they stop eating and they don’t grow well, the organism goes into permanent stress – that can be fatal.”

Last year alone, Igler lost a lot of fish this way! “That was also a huge financial loss.” His response: reduce stocking, ponds had to be closed.

invested tens of thousands of euros
He himself invests tens of thousands of euros in systems that supply extra oxygen. “But for smaller companies such an effort is certainly not feasible. That makes it clear why some people are thinking about closing the doors.” At the same time, “the demand for fresh, local fish is increasing”.

In addition to hot water, there are problems with robbers. The otter population alone devours 800,000 pounds of fish per year. Of course, too often they have no choice in times of famine: according to experts, only 14 percent of all streams and rivers are ecologically intact.
