Ever since the injured swan “Hansi” has kept company with the amputee swan “Greti” at the animal shelter in Parndorf in Burgenland, there has been eager cuddling in the hospital room every day.
The skinned swan “Hansi”, which was rescued from the water on April 1 at a hydroelectric power station in Styria by the fire brigade and was transferred to the animal shelter in Parndorf for an operation, is on the mend.
That his recovery is going so well is probably due not only to the loving care of the animal shelter director and veterinarian Claudia Herka, but also to a swan named “Greti”, with whom “Hansi” recently left his infirmary.

“‘Greti’ was found in Podersdorf with a broken right upper arm. Unfortunately, due to the open fracture and the severe entrapment, I had to amputate her wing,” says Herka and talks about the budding love between the two: “They eat together and cuddle together when they to sleep!”
And what happens when both are fully recovered? “Then ‘Hansi’ decides for himself whether to fly away or stay with ‘Greti’ and move into a royal house with her. Swans that cannot fly are gladly given to castle pond owners who are also happy with handicapped animals.”
