Marlaska defends Arturo Espejo’s promotion because “he is or was charged” for Zabalza’s death

Date:

“Refer to the specific resolution on the basis of which Mr. Espejo was formally charged,” the minister asked PNV senators Almudena Otaola and Geroa Bai Koldo Martínez Urionabarrenetxea, who censored that the Ministry of Interior promoted this agent.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska reminded the Senate on Tuesday that the Lieutenant General of the Guardia Civil Arturo mirrorrecently appointed head of the Corps Support Command, will not be charged in Mikel Zabalza’s death 37 years ago.

“Refer to the specific resolution under which Mr. Espejo is or was formally charged,” the minister asked the PNV senators. Almudena Otaola and from Geroa Bai coldo martinezwho censored during the control session that Internal Affairs promoted this agent who was “involved” in Zabalza’s death.

Mikel Zabalza was arrested on November 26, 1985 in Donostia-San Sebastián in an operation that arrested five other people. He appeared dead in the Bidasoa River after, according to the two senators, Espejo and two other agents took him to the site of an alleged ETA hideout. The Basque government recognized Mikel Zabalza as victim of police brutality.

According to the version of the vigilante, the detainee fled and threw himself into the river, a false hypothesis according to both formations who have maintained in the upper room that Zabalza was tortured in the Intxaurrondo barracks with Espejo involved.

Otaola: ‘They rewarded a torturer’

“They rewarded a torturer,” Otaola said. “They hide the facts and despise the Zabalza family, his memory, reparations”has criticized Koldo Martínez, who has asked Marlaska to clarify whether the PSOE has any “debt” to this vigilante for promoting him.

For his part, Marlaska has criticized the two senators for being concerned about this vigilante’s career now and not over the past 37 years, during which the cop has risen through the ranks of the body without any criticism.

In this sense, he has pointed out that it has been as a result of the Mediator case and the actions of the Lieutenant General in Congress that these parties have begun to attribute “serious unproven” acts to Espejo.

“I would not want anyone to accuse you of anything without the slightest evidence,” he told the PNV senator, to whom he made it clear that the rule of law is the dirty fight against terrorism, but that it is the presumption of innocence.
