At least one person was killed in the collapse of a multi-story parking garage in New York’s Lower Manhattan on Tuesday. Rescuers and the media reported five injuries, with some trapped in the collapsed building. The fire service was initially denied access because the building was very unstable.
The second floor of the Ann Street parking garage, which has existed since 1957, collapsed into the first floor around 4 p.m., NBC and CBS News reported, citing New York City emergency services. There are currently no building violations.
One death has been reported so far. Five people were taken to hospitals with injuries, none of them with life-threatening injuries. These are workers who were employed in the building.
Numerous cars were crushed. The cause of the accident is still unclear.
Firefighters were not allowed to enter the building
Video footage from the scene of the accident, cited by CBS News, shows a rescue operation getting under way. However, firefighters responding to the collapse have been pulled out of the immediate area over concerns about the structural integrity of the building,” the New York City Fire Department said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the emergency services did their best to search for people who might be trapped.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams was notified of the collapse and held a press conference on site (see video above).
