A serious case of benefit fraud became known in Graz on Wednesday. A 61-year-old Croat has defrauded Austrian taxpayers for years out of five figures.
The man filed a declaration with the labor market service in October 2017. Under the pretext of having his main residence in Austria, he not only received benefits from the AMS, but also from Austrian social security. He used this several times to obtain medical services, for example.
For years, the 61-year-old Croat got away with this scam before the AMS Graz-West stopped providing services to men in July 2022 and raised the alarm with authorities in September.
The police have traced a trail
The Graz Criminal Service Group for Social Benefit Fraud (SOLBE) began its work and investigated the suspected fraudster. The man was last questioned and made a partial confession. He is now accused of serious commercial fraud. The Austrian taxpayer suffered five-figure damage at the hands of the man.
