Bear encounters can end in disaster. Especially in the region of Trento, Italy, there have been recent attacks, some of which have been fatal. But the encounters with animals can also be different, as shown by three videos.
In recent times, bear attacks on humans have increased in the Trento region. Two weeks ago, for example, the female bear JJ4, who has since been captured, killed a 26-year-old jogger in Caldes, in Val di Sole in Trentino.
An animal known by the code MJ5 allegedly attacked a man in early March. He had to have surgery on his arm. The Trentino forest management is already looking for MJ5. But not every encounter ends in disaster, as three videos from South Tyrol show.
A video posted by a local Italian broadcaster shows a bear suddenly appearing behind a child. However, the young boy holds his nerve and slowly makes his way down the mountain with his back to the animal. After a while, the bear loses interest and runs away.
Another shot shows a motorcyclist encountering a bear on the side of the road. However, the animal is not really interested in the surprise visit. Instead, the bear devotes itself to his own personal hygiene and occasionally casts an inquisitive glance in the direction of the motorcyclist. After a while, he decides to turn around and see the bear shrinking in the rearview mirror.
Another video, also from South Tyrol, shows a close encounter. A particularly curious bear runs from an embankment to a walker. He tries again and again to calm the animal down with “Shhhh,… Braver”. The recording ends, the bear still follows the walker. However, since the video ended up on the internet, it can be assumed that he was actually a “braver”.
Problem bears must be killed
But for bears actually injuring humans, the region is likely to become uncomfortable in the future. The province of Trento is sticking to its plan to kill problem bears. Animal rights activists oppose the killing of the problem bears and have announced protests.
The animal protection organization OIPA started an online petition for the release of JJ4 on the Change.org platform, which garnered more than 100,000 signatures in just a few hours. Greens leader Angelo Bonelli warned of a “revenge” against the bear population. A protest demonstration is planned for Friday.
