“Out of control” – Italy: minister for moving bears abroad

Date:

The debate about so-called problem bears in Italy continues: the Italian environment minister wants to save the life of bear JJ4, who killed a jogger. The politician also has a solution ready for the rising bear population in Trentino.

Italian Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin is trying to save the life of problem bear JJ4, who was caught in Trentino on Tuesday. “I hope we can find a resettlement solution somewhere,” the minister said in an interview with Radio Ankh’Io on Friday. At the same time, he spoke out in favor of moving bears abroad.

“We need to find a place to bring the bear,” said the minister. Killing JJ4 is not the solution to the population’s coexistence with bears in Trentino. JJ4 had killed a 26-year-old jogger two weeks ago in Caldes in Val di Sole in Trentino.

“The problem that brought this very serious incident to our attention is that there are 120 bears where there should be only 40. They were established after a local human decision for tourism purposes,” Fratin continued.

The project then got “out of control”. “The bears have multiplied disproportionately and now the situation must be rectified. That means a resettlement and expansion plan with more areas. The problem exists,” he said.

Minister: Execution should not be “revenge”.
Killing the bear JJ4 should not be “revenge”. Her death would not restore the young runner’s life, the minister explained. However, the repeated attacks on humans and animals made it clear that “the management of the bears in Trentino has become problematic”.

The whole matter must now be reconsidered to “ensure the safety of residents and tourists”. The resettlement of groups of animals abroad should also be seriously considered. The final decision about the bear rests with the governor of Trentino, Maurizio Fugatti.

Animal rights activists oppose the killing of “problem bears” and have announced protests. That is why the controls around the animal shelter Casteller near Trento, where the captive bear JJ4 is located, have been tightened. Animal rights activists went to the administrative court against the shooting permit and were granted a postponement.

Court ruling expected on May 11
As a result, JJ4 was captured, but she was not allowed to be killed yet. The court’s ruling is expected on May 11. However, in the event of a judicial yes, the animal rights activists could turn to the State Council, the next highest authority.
