Success in Vienna – yellow bin: collection volume increased by approximately 20 percent

Date:

Since 1 January, plastic packaging has been collected in the yellow bin throughout Austria – including Vienna. The new system seems to be working: according to Altstoff Recycling Austria AG (ARA) and municipal service 48, 20 percent more packaging such as chips bags or yoghurt pots have since been thrown in.

The MA 48 has also expanded the collection accordingly to do justice to the increased quantities, as highlighted in a press release. The – a total of 18,000 – yellow bins in Vienna will now also receive additional stickers to inform about the change.

Special round openings
In Vienna, the containers have a special feature. Since the merging of the collection of plastic bottles and metal a few years ago, special round openings have been created. They have to reduce the number of misses, and the city has succeeded. It has gone from 40 to 10 percent. This ratio has not changed, as has now been announced.

The lid of the yellow bin in Vienna, on the other hand, is not intended to be opened. Voluminous and larger plastic and metal packaging – such as Styrofoam or jerry cans – do not fit in the containers. They will be handed over to the Viennese garbage dumps.

“Quality of the collection is important”
“The quality of the collection is extremely important for proper recycling. I am pleased that the Viennese people are already participating diligently and I hope that conservation of resources and protection of the climate will continue to increase,” said MA 48 chief Josef Thon.

“Each correctly disposed of packaging counts. For effective climate protection, all forces must work together: only if the population collects the packaging separately can we recycle it,” emphasizes ARA board spokesperson Harald Hauke.
