Snow cover broken – woman (61) under avalanche: companion as a lifesaver

Dramatic scenes played out in the Tyrolean Ötztal on Saturday afternoon. A 61-year-old was completely buried under an avalanche. But the woman had a guardian angel and a companion who saved her life.

The accident happened around 12 noon. A German skier (58) has ridden on a north slope in the municipality of Sölden northwest of the “Hinterer Wurmkogel” in the open ski area. The snow cover suddenly broke and an avalanche ensued.

The German, a 40-year-old Austrian and the 61-year-old Austrian were swept away by the avalanche. The two men were lucky and were only partially buried. They managed to free themselves from the avalanche. Not so the 61-year-old. The woman could no longer be seen under the snow masses.

The 58-year-old injured his knee in the accident. He was disabled. But the 40-year-old reacted quickly. He was able to locate and exhume the woman in no time. The victim escaped unhurt but unharmed.
