Secret investigations – At the front: this is how Austria hunts war criminals

Date:

Genocide criminal case! Putin’s troops commit atrocities in Ukraine. Homeland security services also target Russian war criminals. A Chechen Austrian fighter faces life imprisonment.

The arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in The Hague against President Vladimir Putin was announced in mid-March and caused a stir worldwide. A first step. Because it is not (yet) about crimes against peace or genocide. The Tsar of Moscow bears personal responsibility for the deportation of children from occupied Ukraine to Russia.

War crimes just 1000 kilometers from Vienna
The Bucha massacre or now the shocking execution videos of apparently Ukrainian prisoners: after Syria, far away, war crimes have come to our attention in the middle of Europe, only about 1000 kilometers from Vienna. Of course, security authorities and secret services hardly want to talk about ongoing investigations. The possible threats to success in tracking down the perpetrators at the front are too delicate.

With the refugee influx – so far 96,000 displaced persons have sought protection in Austria alone – reports of war crimes are skyrocketing. Many eyewitness accounts of torture and murder are hard to bear, even for experienced criminals. In our neighboring country Germany, for example, the Federal Criminal Investigation Department is currently investigating 340 cases (!) based on tips from refugees or the general public.

Living in Austria, killing and dying in Ukraine
The local federal criminal investigation department and the directorate for state security and intelligence (DSN) also investigate on behalf of the judiciary under Article 321. In dry official German, the penal code states, among other things: anyone who kills a person who is to be protected under international humanitarian law related to an armed conflict, shall be punishable by life imprisonment.

Because Austrians also went to war. Born in Odessa on the Black Sea, Natalia died in a drama accident involving an ambulance. The surgeon wanted to provide medical assistance in her home country. A mobile intensive care unit now bears the name “Austrian” in her honor.

In another case, a Chechen from Carinthia apparently commits murders – the Klagenfurt prosecutor’s office has launched a whereabouts investigation – actively for the Moscow troops. He was reported in Austria for war crimes in Ukraine. If he returns, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Like many others that followed, right down to the Russian president.
