Insults and insults are unfortunately no longer uncommon for hospital employees. A psychologist analyzes how this negative development came about.
After the hospital staff reported to the “Krone” and described the increasingly aggressive state of mind of patients – we reported – psychologist and psychotherapist Elisabeth Mandl tried to analyze this negative development. “I’ve been in the business for 27 years and people have become much more impatient and demanding. Many are only focused on themselves. No one is always in a good mood, but what can my counterpart do for that?”
“Everything must be done immediately”
Mandl, who works as a department manager in the psychosocial counseling center of AVS, sees a reason for this mainly in the fast-paced society in combination with social media. “Everything must be done immediately, it would be best if it was done yesterday.”
However, the experienced psychologist often sees the relatives as more of a problem than the patients themselves. “If they can’t take care of their parents themselves, that’s all the more demanded of the carers. In the way of what I can’t do, the other person should!” and that is often conveyed aggressively.”
Expert tips
To defuse such atmospheric situations, Mandl gives the following tips: “It is important not to step on the aggressive opponent, not to go to the same level and therefore not to offer him a podium. You have to try to remain calm and objective and not shoot back emotionally, otherwise the situation will escalate.”
