The man’s exact destination was unclear
On the wonderfully beautiful Saturday, the 61-year-old drove to the Zillertal around 5:30 am. Apparently without specifying an exact mountain destination to its surroundings. It was a tough omen when relatives reported him missing around 9:30 p.m. A trip to the Schwarzenstein (3368 meters) was suspected, but the mountain rescue services of Tux and Ginzling searched in vain for the right parking spaces.
Border mountain to Italy as a search area
A police patrol encountered the man’s car at the Au inn in Zillergrund on Sunday morning. He then rode his bicycle into the branching Sundergrund and apparently wanted to climb the Wollbachspitze (3209 meters) – another mountain on the border between Tyrol and Italy. “We found the man’s bicycle at about 1700 meters altitude,” says Dominik Hauser of the Mayrhofen mountain rescue service.
The search on Sunday was hampered by dense fog on the main Alpine ridge. “A classic foehn situation, the last 400 meters you couldn’t see anything at all.” Five mountain rescuers were nearby, found a route to the ascent, but had to turn back because the danger was too great. The police helicopter Libelle also waited in vain. The search was temporarily suspended in the afternoon, a follow-up is planned for Monday.
