Lavrov says Russia is not seeking regime change in Ukraine, but “to ensure security of Donbass”

Date:

The Russian foreign minister has offered his first interview to the European media since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has assured that Russia is not aiming for regime change in Ukraine, “that is the specialty of the United States”, but to ensure the safety of the people of the east, the Donbass.

This Sunday, he offered his first interview to a European medium, the Italian television channel Rete4, since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

“We do not want[Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky]to surrender, but rather to end hostilities,” he said.

Lavrov urged the infiltration of supposedly neo-Nazi sectors into Ukrainian institutions and, warned of Zelensky’s Jewish ancestry, replied that Adolf Hitler “was also of Hebrew descent”.

On the other hand, he did not respond when asked whether this week’s attack on Kiev was a provocation on the day United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres was in town.

On the other hand, he has defended Putin’s decision that the supply of gas to “enemy” countries should be paid in rubles because, due to the blockade imposed by sanctions, Russia cannot access its reserves in dollars and euros.
