An expected re-election bid — and an unenthusiastic electorate: US President Joe Biden could announce his bid for a second term in the White House on Tuesday. According to media reports, the 80-year-old American Democrat will then officially announce in a video that he wants to run again in the 2024 presidential election. This has not yet been officially confirmed.
Biden is already the oldest president in US history – and would be 86 years old at the end of a possible second term.
The criticism is getting loud
Many American voters are therefore critical of the president’s renewed candidacy: according to a survey published on Sunday by American broadcaster NBC, 70 percent of those polled believe that Biden should not run again. His Democrat supporters are 51 percent.
Approval values Bidens in descent
Nearly half of voters opposed to running again cite Biden’s advanced age as a major reason for their opinion. The president has long had an approval rating of just over 40 percent.
Biden had already indicated that he wanted to pursue a second term after the November midterm elections, which were successful for the Democrats. American media then reported last week that he wanted to publish a video on Tuesday. This would be exactly four years to the day since Biden entered the presidential race against then-President Donald Trump.
Only two internal challengers so far
In the United States, there is a tradition for presidents to run for a second term. Biden is unlikely to have serious challengers within the party for the presidential candidacy primary. So far, only two outspoken outsiders — anti-vaccine Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and self-help author Marianne Williamson — said they intend to run for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Among opposition Republicans, Trump and former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley have so far made their presidential candidacy official. The primaries will start early next year and the presidential election will take place in November 2024.
