As of Monday, there are four shipwrecks off the coast of the southern Italian island of Lampedusa. Two people were killed and 17 are missing. 165 people could be saved.
Due to good weather conditions, the number of migrants arriving in Lampedusa has recently increased significantly. On the night of Tuesday alone, 19 boats carrying a total of 705 people landed on the island. On Monday, 28 boats arrived with a total of 1117 people. There are 2,698 people in the island’s hot spot, while there are only 400 places in the shelter.
The rescue ship “Mv Humanity 1” arrived in the northern Italian Adriatic port of Ravenna with 69 people on board. Most migrants come from African countries, including Sudan.
The government in Rome has declared a state of emergency across the country due to the recent high number of migrations via the Mediterranean route. This is valid for six months. Special funding should be made available for the southern regions where the migrants arrive.
Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni under pressure
The state of emergency has now allowed the Italian government to set up new reception centers for incoming migrants to speed up identification and deportation. About 115,000 refugees are currently being hosted by Italy’s reception system. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni calls for more support from the EU.
