So far, about 50 Austrians abroad and their relatives have been safely removed from Sudan, “most of them as part of air evacuation missions,” the foreign ministry announced on Wednesday. About 25 of those affected are children.
The evacuees are mainly Austrian expatriates with Sudanese roots, most of whom have lived in Sudan for several years, it said.
Thanks to the Secretary of State
Early Wednesday morning, Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) thanked his Dutch colleague Wopke Hoekstra, his ministry and the Dutch Ministry of Defense via Twitter for bringing several Austrians to safety from Sudan with a Dutch evacuation flight. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, those involved are already on their way to Austria with the support of the Austrian embassy in The Hague.
Contact with remaining Austrians
A dozen Austrians residing in Sudan are currently still registered with the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “We are in constant direct, personal contact with those who remain in Sudan regarding developments and other options to support them safely exit the country, including as part of other planned evacuation missions from our European partners. There is still capacity on these evacuation flights for Austrian citizens who want to leave the country, “said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Austria does not have its own embassy in Sudan.
