The rush to Lampedusa does not stop: since Tuesday, 19 boats with a total of 647 people have arrived on the island in the Mediterranean Sea. The Italian coastguard also had to recover two bodies.
The dead were on board a boat that had departed from Sfax, Tunisia. Another 62 people on board were brought ashore on Lampedusa on Tuesday evening.
Lampedusa is bursting at the seams
In total, nearly 1,900 migrants are now in the island’s refugee camp, authorities said. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi traveled to Lampedusa on Tuesday afternoon to coordinate the migrants’ journey to Sicily. He met the island’s mayor, Filippo Mannino.
The interior minister promised that the transfer of migrants from Lampedusa to Sicily would take place as soon as possible in order to relieve the island. Lampedusa can no longer bear the full burden of the strong migration movements of recent weeks, said the minister.
Good weather brings even more boats
Due to good weather conditions, the number of migrants arriving in Lampedusa has recently increased significantly. As of Monday, there are four shipwrecks off the coast of the southern Italian island. Two people were killed and 17 are missing. 165 people could be saved.
