Suddenly on the hook – 100 kilos, 3 m long: Shark alert for Lignano

Date:

Shark alert in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Lignano, one of Austria’s favorite beaches: a 13-year-old fisherman suddenly had a three-meter thresher shark on his line…

Three years after the spectacular catch of a thresher shark in the Gulf of Trieste, a similar event took place near Lignano in recent days. The 13-year-old fisherman Filipo from Udine suddenly hooked the shark, which weighed about 100 kilos, according to a video.

The boy, who was traveling with his father, according to Italian media, was unharmed and managed to remove the hook from the predatory fish’s mouth. The current case is also an “Alopias vulpinus” – i.e. a “common thresher shark”.

There are dozens of shark species in the Mediterranean Sea. But sightings of the animals are becoming increasingly rare. It has been decades since the last fatal attack in Europe. In the 1980s, there were two fatal attacks by great white sharks, some of which are also found in the Mediterranean.

Great white sharks in the Mediterranean give birth in the Strait of Sicily, the Adriatic Sea and the Aegean Sea, according to a report by WWF.
