Following the uproar over a Chinese ambassador’s remarks about ex-Soviet republics, the Beijing government has pledged to protect the independence of several Central Asian states.
As always, China will continue to work on their sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, Foreign Minister Qin Gang said on Wednesday after meeting his colleagues from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in Xian.
China against “external interference”
His government also rejects any outside interference in the internal affairs of these former Soviet republics. On April 21, Chinese Ambassador to Paris Lu Shaye sparked outrage on French television by noting that former Soviet states such as Ukraine had no “real status under international law”.
The foreign ministry in Beijing on Monday distanced itself from the statements, which were “not a political statement, but an expression of his personal views”.
