Record month – April: Wet and cloudy like it hasn’t been in a long time

Date:

April was marked by very intense precipitation. Unusually large amounts of rain were accompanied by new highs in some regions of Austria. In terms of temperatures, it was also colder in April 2023 than in 26 years.

Rainfall exceeded the climate average in almost all parts of the country. In 2017, such large amounts of precipitation fell in Austria for the last time. The Austrian assessment of April 2023 found that the amount of rain was 76 percent above average. This month is one of the ten wettest April months since rainfall records began in 1858.

Wet and cloudy until April
Especially in Lower Austria, Vienna and northern Burgenland, the heavy rainfall in the Easter month set new records. Much of the monthly total of showers in the south and southeast occurred between April 12 and April 14. In these parts of the country, about 150 to 250 percent more precipitation than usual fell in April. In total, up to 80 liters per square meter were collected in Austria. The heavy rains of these three days at least helped the already too dry eastern half of Austria.

Where has the summer gone?
In April, too, people waited in vain for summer temperatures. This month was significantly cooler on average than in recent decades. Climatologist Alexander Orlik of GeoSphere Austria says: “As the April months have brought record heat very often over the past 20 years, this April even seemed unusually cold.” For the first time since 2008 there was no summer day. The highest temperature was measured on April 22 at 24.6 degrees at the weather station of the University of Innsbruck.
