Order in Brazil – investigations against neo-Nazis: Telegram blocked

Date:

A Brazilian court on Wednesday ordered the nationwide blocking of the messaging app Telegram. The operators of the online service have refused to provide authorities with data on members of neo-Nazi groups on Telegram, Justice Minister Flavio Dino said on Wednesday.

In addition to the “temporary suspension” of the online service, a fine of one million reais (about 180,000 euros) per day was also imposed for ignoring the authorities’ request. “There are groups called ‘Antisemitic Front’ and ‘Antisemitic Movement’ that are active in these networks and we know that they are at the heart of the violence against our children,” he added, referring to a spate of attacks on schools.

Bloody deeds with a far-right connection?
In March, a 13-year-old boy killed a teacher in a knife attack at a school in Sao Paulo. In early April, a man killed four children between the ages of four and seven at a kindergarten in the southern town of Blumenau.

That same week there were two other non-fatal attacks on schools. In November, a 16-year-old shot and killed four people in attacks on two schools in Aracruz, in the southeastern state of Espirito Santo. The news portal G1, citing police sources, reported that the teenager had been in contact with anti-Semitic groups on Telegram.
