In the proceedings surrounding the recently discovered data leak from US Secret Service documents, the prosecution is demanding that the arrested military IT specialist remain in prison. There is a high risk of absconding, the prosecutors say in a letter that will be handed over to the court before next Thursday. Jack Teixeira, 21, faces at least 25 years in prison if convicted.
He continues to pose a “major threat” to national security. “He may still have access to a wealth of classified information that could be of immense value to enemy states,” the 18-page letter read.
“They could provide him with a safe haven and try to facilitate his escape from the United States.” The information Teixeira had access to went far beyond what was previously known: “The damage the suspect continues to do may be extraordinary.”
Teixeira was expelled from school
In the document, the prosecutor also states that the 21-year-old is potentially dangerous. Teixeira has a disturbing history of racist and violent language. He was suspended from high school for comments about guns and Molotov cocktails.
When he was arrested, several weapons were found in his room. In the chat room, he said, among other things, that if it were up to him, he would “kill a lot of people” because it would “eliminate the weak”.
According to the prosecution, Teixeira’s lawyers want him to be released from prison until further notice and to live with his father. The National Guardsman was arrested April 13 in his hometown of North Dighton, Massachusetts. He is suspected of having published a series of secret papers in a chat room, including about the war in Ukraine.
From there, they spread across the web. Teixeira is accused of unauthorized deletion, storage and transmission of classified and national defense information.
