A huge column of smoke caused horror in Vienna-Brigittenau on Wednesday afternoon. According to witnesses, the pitch-black cloud could even be seen from the Millennium Tower. What happened: A fire broke out in the apartment of an apartment building on Hellwagstrasse at the corner of Dresednerstrasse. Numerous people had to be cared for by the rescue team.
On Wednesday around 3 p.m., a contingent of fire brigade, police and rescue services stood in front of the burning building. The inferno was filmed by a reader reporter from “Krone” (see video). According to the Viennese fire brigade, the room in the residential building was already on fire and the residents of the apartment were able to escape.
Due to the enormous heat caused by the flames, all the windows of the courtyard of the apartment affected by the fire burst, according to the professional fire brigade. “There was also a risk that the flames would spread to the apartment above,” said the spokesperson. Firefighters immediately began fighting the fire.
The apartment door was not closed
At the same time, respiratory protection teams checked whether the stairwell (see photo) and other apartments were full of smoke because the residents had forgotten to close the door of the burning apartment.
In addition, a fire extinguisher prevented the flames from spreading to the outside area. Fortunately, fire could be prevented.
In addition to the professional fire brigade, the Viennese professional rescue service was also present. Numerous people had to be cared for by the rescuers. The fire service could not say exactly how many of those affected actually had to go to hospital.
